Spring is in the Air

The weather is starting to warm up which always makes the kids a little stir crazy (and myself as well).  It seems like such a waste of a beautiful day to spend the majority of it inside - so we brought our classroom outside...

Reading Everyone Needs a Grocery Store

Math Lesson...
Somehow function machines became more interesting while surrounded by grass :)

We will be taking advantage of this spring weather before the summer heat begins to creep in - it's definitely not fun to work a problem while sweating. :)

Happy Holidays

I had to make a quick exit on our last day of school due to a sick baby girl at home.  I was sad to have missed the Polar Express Party, but I heard the kids had a blast.  I was however able to participate in our book exchange - oh, how excited we were all were for new books to read!

We immediately opened our books to browse the pictures and read the wonderful stories.  There is no better gift than the gift of reading!!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and a blessed New Year!  See you in 2013!

The Daily Five...In Action

With a brand new school I have decided to introduce a brand new reading structure in the classroom.  This structure removes all of the guesswork from the children concerning classroom routines and procedures and allows them to concentrate fully on learning.

The structure I have introduced is called the “Daily Five”. Soon your child will be talking about “The Daily Five” at home. This literacy structure teaches independence and gives children the skills needed to create a lifetime love of reading and writing. It consists of five tasks that are introduced individually.
  • Read to Self
  • Read to Someone
  • Listen to Reading
  • Work on Writing
  • Word Work
When introduced to each task, the children discuss what it looks like, sounds like,
and feels like to engage in the task independently. Then, the children work on building their stamina until they are successful at being independent while doing that task.

When all five tasks have been introduced and the children are fully engaged in reading and writing activities, I am able to work with small groups and confer with children one on one. This structure is proven effective, the results are amazing, and the children really look forward to Daily Five time. Ask your child about Daily Five and see what he/she has to say. I anticipate your child will tell you about the class stamina, how we are working towards independence, and maybe you will even hear about some of the fantastic things your child has written, read, or listened to during our structured reading time (www.dailycafe.com).

Here are a few pictures of our "Read to Self" time as we are building our stamina to read independently.

Week 11

I can not thank you enough, parents, for the incredible turn-out for conferences last night!  The feedback I received was extremely positive and motivating and I am looking forward to keeping that momentum going.

It is Red Ribbon Week and we are pledging to be drug-free, alcohol-free and tobacco-free.  We have activities planned for each day to show our commitment such as wearing hats on Tuesday to "put a cap on drugs," wearing mismatched socks on Wednesday to "sock it to drugs" and wear your favorite team jersey to "team up against drugs."

We will be assessing on reading next week to put our reading groups together based on proper DRA levels.  Please keep an eye out for your child's results so you are informed on where they stand.

We have implemented the Book It Reading Program where students can earn pizza vouchers from Pizza Hut for reading 20 books per month.  Additional information can be found in your child's homework folder.

Congratulations to Tyonna Butler who received four purples and a blue for her behavior last week!  Awesome, Awesome, Awesome - well deserved Student of the Week.

Have a great week!
